Embedding Equity for Better Methods, Evidence, and Practice

SREE 2023 Conference Updates

The SREE 2023 conference theme, "Embedding Equity for Better Methods, Evidence, and Practice" is about truly embedding equity into our research and practice. Doing so may require expanding our notion of what counts as evidence for decision making. Read more about this year's conference on our website.

Timeline
June 27, 2023: Decision notifications sent
June 27, 2023: Preliminary program online
June 27, 2023: Registration opens

Awards and Funding
As in previous years, SREE will offer both travel grants and awards to selected individuals to attend the conference this year. Details will be shared later this month via email, social media, and our website.

SREE Awards 11 Undergraduate Internships for Summer 2023

We are thrilled to announce that SREE has awarded funding for 11 outstanding internships for the summer of 2023, representing an investment of almost $50,000 in undergraduate internship funding. This is a testament to the compelling response we received to the internship application - a clear indication of the demand and necessity for this type of financial support to foster the next generation of researchers. We’re excited to recognize our internship recipients:

  • Mykle Davis, Ball State University
  • Chantria Garcia, Wellesley College
  • Hannah Garner, UNC Chapel Hill
  • Luis Jimenez, University of Michigan- Ann Arbor
  • Genysis Martinez, Hampton University
  • Hannah Martinez, University of California, Berkeley
  • Naima McRoberts, Oberlin College
  • Karin Owens, Hampton University
  • Jennifer Ramirez, University of California, Berkeley
  • Natalie Villacres, Brown University
  • Mia Moore, Hampton University

In line with our commitment to equity and access in research, all the awarded funds were given to students from underrepresented student groups. Significantly, one-third of the intern awards are funding students who are currently studying at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This further underscores our unwavering dedication to promoting representation and inclusivity in education research.

Through this initiative, we continue to strive for equity in the field to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to contribute to the robust education research landscape. Please join us in congratulating these deserving scholars and wishing them a successful and enriching summer internship experience.

Affinity Group News: Open Science in Educational Research

The newly formed affinity group on Open Science in Educational Research would like to take the opportunity to highlight some Open Science news that might be of interest to SREE members.

1. Open Science Standards: Where Should SREE Go From Here?
At this year’s SREE conference, the Open Science in Educational Research affinity group will host a town hall discussion on open science standards at JREE. We will begin with a presentation of on open science practices among JREE authors since the policy change in April 2022 in which JREE became a “Level 1” implementer of all standards in the TOP Guidelines, requiring authors to disclose whether they have used each of the open science practices in the TOP Guidelines. We will then solicit thoughts and discussions on potential future directions for JREE to further increase open science practices (e.g., Registered Reports).

2. New Open Science Listserv for Educational Researchers- [OpenSciEdu-L]
There is a new community space [OpenSciEdu-L] reserved for sharing information and engaging in discussions about Open Science practices with a focus on promoting Open Science, especially in the field of Educational Research. This listserv was created by members of the Federation of education hubs and the goal is to “Disseminate information about open science across communities and to accelerate adoption of open scholarship in education research through community and connection.” Instructions for joining the listserv appear below.

OPENSCIEDU-L Listserv directions:

1. Send an email to [email protected]
2. Make sure to leave the subject line blank
3. Then type in the body of the email: SUBSCRIBE OPENSCIEDU-L First Name Last Name
To start a conversation on this listserv, simply send your email to [email protected]

If you have any questions about the listserv, email Betsy McCoach ([email protected]). If you have additional questions about the Federation, or if you would like more information about how you can get involved, please contact Matt Makel ([email protected]).

3. Free Webinar on Big-Team Science Applied to Open Educational Resources and Metascience Jul 12, 2023 11:00 AM
While the wave of scientific reform is influencing scientific practices and norms globally, the current model of higher-education is largely outdated with respect to open science. Big-team science can be of service to pedagogical reform towards the integration of open science principles into the prototypical courses across STEM, social-sciences, and the humanities, including diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. In this webinar, you will learn about initiatives of the Framework for Open and Reproducible Research Training (FORRT) which address the underappreciated pedagogical aspect of open and reproducible science using big-team science approaches to mitigate teachers’ and researchers’ time constraints in developing course and peer-to-peer training materials as well as improving their research practices. Get an overview of FORRT followed by a brief introduction to nine current ongoing FORRT projects.

To register for the webinar being held on 7/12 at 11AM EDT, go to https://www.cos.io/events

4. Join the SREE Affinity Group on Open Science in Educational Research!
As a reminder, if you are a SREE member and would like to join the newly formed Open Science in Educational Research SREE affinity group, please submit your interest here to be added to the group.

Institutional Member Corner: NYU Steinhardt

The research on students who do not graduate from high school has traditionally focused on students who drop out before their expected graduation date. This ignores the experiences of persisting students: those who remain enrolled in high school on or beyond their expected graduation date, but have yet to earn a diploma. Recent analyses from NYU Steinhardt's Research Alliance for New York City Schools show that where data are available, persisting students are estimated to be equal to or greater in number than dropouts.

Research Alliance Senior Research Associate Kathryn Hill and Affiliate Zitsi Mirakhur co-authored a new article in the journal Children & Schools, arguing that persisting students warrant greater attention in research, policy, and practice efforts aimed at promoting high school completion and the postsecondary transition. Learn more about the Research Alliance's article on persisting students.
