Join SREE for 2023
We invite you to renew your membership or join SREE for the first time in 2023 if you have not already done so. Be a part of our community of researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and organizations who seek to create and apply effectiveness research to achieve better, more equitable educational outcomes. This year, you have the option of joining for 1 or 2 years, with a discount available to those that select the two-year regular membership option. Your membership allows us to continue offering the most relevant programs and resources to those within the education research field.
Summer Fellowship Now Accepting Applications
SREE, in collaboration with EdFunder’s LEAD Impact Group, is pleased to offer the SREE Summer Fellows Program again this year. The purpose of this program is to connect educational researchers with philanthropic organizations seeking research information without having the time or expertise to access it and, in doing so, advance the use of high-quality education research. SREE student members will have the opportunity to spend the summer working on a 'real world' research project answering a question that the philanthropic community is asking to help inform their work.
Interested students should submit their interest here and submit materials to [email protected]. The deadline to apply is April 24th. Additional projects may be added, so keep an eye on our website.

Quick Glance of an Upcoming Issue of JREE
Check out the Table of Contents for our upcoming issue 16(2) in which we feature seven new articles, 4 focused on methods, and 3 evaluation studies. The methodological studies add valuable insights on covariate balance in observational studies, adjusting standard errors with limited numbers of clusters, reducing bias in impact forecasts, and fit statistics for latent transition analysis. In the evaluation articles the impacts of healthcare training programs, teacher retention, and first grade math interventions are estimated.

Comments Requested on Initial Proposals For Updating OMB's Race and Ethnicity Statistical Standards
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) requests comments on the initial proposals from the Federal Interagency Technical Working Group on Race and Ethnicity Standards (Working Group) for revising OMB's 1997 Statistical Policy Directive No. 15: Standards for Maintaining, Collecting, and Presenting Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity (SPD 15).[1] Responses to this Notice will be shared with the Working Group and will help the Working Group develop their final recommendations to OMB and will also help OMB determine how to revise SPD 15 to improve the quality and usefulness of Federal race and ethnicity data.

New SREE Affinity Group: Open Science in Educational Research
SREE recently approved the newest affinity group for those interested in Open Science principles. All SREE members are invited to become a part of this group at no cost. Submit your interest here to be added to any of our affinity group listservs.
Please read the below message from Betsy McCoach, co-founder of the affinity group:
We are pleased to announce the formation and approval of a new SREE affinity group devoted to Open Science in Educational Research. Many of the members of SREE are interested in or actively involved in promoting Open Science principles in educational research, and it is our hope that the Open Science in Educational Research affinity group will provide a more formalized mechanism to create a community of Open Science researchers within the organization.
The goals of the SREE Open Science in Educational Research affinity group are to:
- Provide a supportive community within SREE (and within educational research more broadly) for educational researchers, policy makers, and practitioners to discuss issues related to open science.
- Provide an opportunity for educational researchers who are interested in learning more about open science and/or who are interested in promoting open science practices in education to network with each other and collaborate with each other.
- Promote Open Science practices in educational research.
- Educate educational researchers and the broader educational community about open science principles and practices.
As this affinity group was recently approved by SREE, we are just beginning the process of soliciting members and planning activities. However, we are hoping to host a reception or networking event at this year’s SREE conference. In addition, SREE is hosting an Open Science listserv so that affinity group members can discuss Open Science related issues throughout the year. We are also planning to develop a webpage to share Open Science related resources with SREE and the larger education community.
Any SREE member can join the Open Science in Educational Research affinity group at no cost. During the next membership renewal cycle, SREE members will be able to indicate if they would like to affiliate with the Open Science in Educational Research affinity group. In the meantime, if you are a SREE member and would like to join the Open Science in Educational Research SREE affinity group, please submit your interest here to be added to the group.

DIR Names Dr. Sylvia R. Epps as New President
Dr. Russell H. Jackson, founder and president of Decision Information Resources, Inc. (DIR), a leading small minority-owned research and evaluation firm, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sylvia R. Epps as the next president of DIR, effective April 1, 2023.
Dr. Epps' appointment as the president of DIR is the perfect example of preparation and passion meeting opportunity. Since joining DIR in 2004 (initially as a consultant and later full-time), Dr. Epps has risen through positions of increasing leadership and impact across the company. “It is an honor and privilege to step into this role to sustain Russell’s legacy and continue developing my own. He has been an excellent mentor as we prepared for this transition. Russell's legacy is anchored in creating opportunities for minorities to engage in the research process. This space is sacred to me as I did not have access to many research mentors of color or even opportunities to collaborate with diverse teams. DIR Awarded Two New Contracting Vehicles
We are pleased to announce that DIR was recently awarded two major contracting vehicles– the Farm to School Research Blanket Purchase Agreement (BPA) and the Procurement of Research Evaluation and Statistics Task Orders (PRESTO) contract.
Farm to School (FtS) Research is a single-award BPA developed to provide research services to better understand participation in farm-to-school activities by school food authorities (SFAs) and other stakeholders on behalf of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Services (FNS). DIR is conducting the first task order under this BPA, The 2023 Farm to School Census (Census), a web-based survey that will be sent to all SFAs in public or charter schools nationwide in fall 2023 and collect information about school year 2022-2023.
The PRESTO program is a multiple-award, indefinite delivery/indefinite-quantity contract in the U.S. Department of Education with five scope categories. The goal of this $2 billion dollar contract vehicle is to provide a diversified pool of vendors to meet the additional requirements and mission critical needs of the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). DIR was awarded the PRESTO IDIQ contract in three of the five categories – (1) education sciences support activities, (2) assessment development support activities, and (3) recruitment and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiatives.

NYU Steinhardt Launches MSI Data Project
In response to inaccurate and inconsistent data used to identify minority-serving institutions (MSIs) for funding and analysis, researchers – led by principal investigator and NYU Steinhardt Assistant Professor of Education, Mike Hoa Nguyen – established a database with recommendations for uniform and accurate MSI classifications.
The MSI Data Project, launched in March 2023, offers dashboards with data on MSI eligibility, funding status, institutional characteristics, enrollment, and graduation metrics for MSIs from 2017-2021. “Our goal in constructing a longitudinal MSI database is to advance a standardized and uniform definition and typology for MSIs. Our hope is for researchers to utilize our database to conduct more precise research on and with MSIs, and for MSI leaders, advocates, and policymakers to use this body of research, as well as our data dashboards, to make better-informed decisions that promote equitable educational outcomes for students,” explains Nguyen.
